Maryland Landlord Tenant Lawyer: Is The Landlord Responsible For Exterminating Bedbugs?

Maryland’s Rent Escrow law requires landlords to repair and eliminate conditions “which constitute, or if not promptly corrected will constitute, a fire hazard or a serious and substantial threat to the life, health, or safety of occupants.”

Defects to property include things like lack of heat, light, electricity, or hot or cold running water. Arguably, bed bugs pose a threat to your health and would fall into the category of repairs required by a landlord. Many leases make the tenant responsible for pest control and this could present a stumbling block to requiring the landlord to deal with begbugs.
