First-Time Home Buyer Transfer Tax in Howard County for Public Servants

In Howard County, Maryland, the local government recognizes the invaluable contributions of law enforcement officers; fire and rescue services members; and certificated professional teachers to the community. In appreciation of their dedicated service, the county has implemented favorable transfer tax provisions, offering exemptions and rate reductions for eligible individuals.

To qualify for the transfer tax exemption, individuals must be first time home buyers and be a Howard County police officer or deputy sheriff, fire and rescue service member, or a certified professional teacher employed by the Howard County Board of Education. Eligible individuals can enjoy a complete exemption from the transfer tax when transferring their primary residence. Subsequent home buyers who meet these criteria will be taxed 0.7% County Transfer Tax.

By alleviating financial burdens associated with real estate transactions, the county aims to make homeownership more attainable for those who dedicate their careers to improving the community. To verify the current status of these and any other exemptions, please contact the county finance office.
