Maryland Estate Administration, Valuation of Stocks
In Maryland the Information Report and Inventory for an administration probate is due within three months of opening the estate. These must be filed by the attorney and/or the Personal Representative along with proper valuation of all assets and supporting documents and appraisals. Each asset has a particular way of being valued under Maryland law and it is important that they be filed correctly to avoid delay or responsibility for improper filing.
Corporate stocks listed on a national or regional exchange should be included on Schedule D. When calculating the value, you must use the decedent’s date of death. The value of a corporate stock, whether common or preferred, is the mean (average) between the highest and lowest publically quoted selling price on that day. For traded stocks (New York Stock Exchange & American Stock Exchange) the value is the average of the quoted high and low. For over the counter or regional exchanges you will used the average of the bid and ask quotations. If the stock is not listed, Maryland law requires that a broker valuation may be necessary.
