Chillum, Maryland Estate Planning: File a Will
Maryland, unlike many states, allows Wills to be filed with the county in which you live. As an estate planning attorney, I have encountered clients in Maryland who have failed (or their attorney failed) to file their Will with the county. This is a critical final step in the Will creation process as it ensures safe keeping and quick access to your Will by the court that will handle probate for your estate. Filing of Wills is a service that I provide for all of my clients.
Chillum, Maryland & Prince George’s County Residents
If, like many of my clients, you live in Chillum, or anywhere in Prince George’s County, you should file your Will with the Register of Wills. If you haven’t done so you should submit your Will as follows:
1. Seal your Will in an envelope
2. On the outside of the envelope write your name, address, social security number, date of the Will, and the name of your Personal Representative
3. Place this envelope along with $5 payable to “Register of Wills, Prince George’s County” inside a larger envelope
4. Mail to: Register of Wills, Hon. Cereta A. Lee Courthouse, 14735 Main Street, Room D4001, Upper Marlboro, MD 20773.
Updating Your Will
If your Will is several years old or you have experienced any life-changing events since your Will was created, such as marriage, divorce, the birth or death of a child, a child who is no longer a minor, a child who has since gotten married, a change in residence, or the death of anyone named in your Will, including Personal Representatives or back-up Personal Representatives, you should have your Will reviewed and updated.
At the Law Office of Stephen J. Reichert, LLC, I will personally review your potentially outdated Will during a free consultation and discuss your options and needs for updating your Will. I also will provide you with Trust options that may offer significant advantages to your estate planning.
For a free, confidential conversation to discuss these and other estate planning matters, contact Maryland estate planning attorney Stephen J. Reichert at 410-299-4959, sreichert@reichertlegal.com or by clicking here. I provide office or home meetings at your convenience throughout Maryland including all of Prince George’s County.
