What Is a Maryland Resident Agent?
A Maryland resident agent is a person designated by a Maryland business to act as the company’s publicly identified point of contact to receive and forward official documents or notices on behalf of the company.
State law requires any company lacking a physical address in Maryland to designate a resident agent. In addition to maintaining a physical address, a resident agent must be available during regular business hours to ensure that important documents or notices are received. A failure to meet and maintain this state requirement could result in a failure to receive critical documents as well as jeopardize a company’s standing with the state.
A legal entity, such as a corporation, may also be designated as a registered agent, as long as the entity has a physical address located in the state of Maryland.
